My Story

The following is my father's obituary that ran in the New York Times and the local paper. I find it somewhat lame, because if it were up to me I would have included so much more detail... like how he was his college's radio station manager, or how he would play the piano at every opportunity he could, or how he followed politics like a fanatical teenager, or how he seemed to always have a smile on his face even in his last days. Or how he knew all of my favorite bands and musicians, and would listen to them and learn about them just so he could discuss them with me. Or how he could have been a private investigator based on how he could locate me anywhere when I was an unmanageable high schooler (this was pre-cellphones). Okay, maybe I wouldn't have included the last part. But there is such a wealth of experiences, personality traits and quirks, and memories I could share about my dad. But he would have preferred a minimal obituary... I am the flowery, over-the-top personality, not him, so his obit should be as he would have wanted. He was brilliant yet humble... and one of the kindest people I have known or ever will. He was socially awkward, but sweet as pie. And he tried his best to be a perfect father, by the rules, because in his world, everything had instructions or a method, everything had a right or wrong, and everything was just. He wanted all people to be as honest as he was. I truly believe that somewhere in his mind he thought if he followed what his doctors told him, and took the right meds, he could live forever. He WILL live forever, just not in the concrete sense he may have imagined.
