Ben McCullough was  a sheriff's Deputy of Manchester, Tenn. He was to be off from work on the day of July 10, 1935, But was asked to come in to help. They had took so many men out to work the chain gang.  The prisoner asked if he could go in and change clothes. McCullough let the prisoner Gene Floyd go  to get changed, He was related to the Floyds he had married.

Inside he found a gun which he later shot and killed Ben with. His name was Gene Floyd. Another prisoner Dudley Wilson took McCullough's gun and they escaped and was trailed for several miles. The mcCullough family has produced law enforcement officiers serving Coffee County.
