Dr. Catherine P. (Powell) Simmers, 91, passed away on September 7, 2011 while battling a bout of pneumonia. Originally born in Waynesburg, Pa., Catherine graduated from Waynesburg University, and worked for the FBI during the second World War. She raised 3 children in Pa. and Ohio before returning to school for her PHd in Psychology at Case Western Reserve. She built a 25-year career as a psychiatrist in New Jersey beginning in 1971. Catherine enjoyed walking the beaches of Sandy Hook with her 7 grandchildren, and promoting Emily’s list for young women seeking public office. Catherine is survived by her two sisters, Barbara (Powell) Stitt and Margaret (Peggy Powell) Murdock, her sons Mark (Seattle) and Doug (Massillon, Ohio), her daughter Joyce Harrington (Seville, Ohio), seven grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren. Funeral services and burial will be held at 12:00 PM on Saturday, Sept. 10, at Milliken and Throckmorton Funeral Homes in Waynesburg, Pa. Catherine will be buried next to her beloved Mother and Father.
