NOTICE: We are placing a memorial bench in Ft. Ord National Monument in honor of Chuck. Chuck's Bench Dedication is July 14th. We will hike 1.5 miles to "Chuck's Bench." Dr. Charles
W. (Chuck) Hutchins, CDR USN (ret), died Friday, March 9th in Monterey, CA. Family was by his side from the moment of
his cancer diagnosis in October through his peaceful final moments.
Dr. Hutchins grew up in Altadena, CA, hiking
the mountains of the Arroyo Seco.
He obtained an M.A. in Psychology from Cal State, LA before joining the United States Navy in 1963. His career began
at the Naval Aviation Flight Training School in Pensacola, FL as an Aerospace
Research Psychologist in the Medical Service Corps. While with the Navy, he received a Ph.D. in Statistical
Psychology from The Ohio State University. In 1969, Dr. Hutchins reported to the Naval Aviation
Development Center in Warminster, PA.
In 1975, while stationed in San Diego, CA, Dr. Hutchins headed the
Captivity Analysis Branch at the joint Army/Navy Center for Prisoner War
Studies. His research regarding Navy Vietnam POW’s influenced the Navy’s
Survival Evasion Resistance and Escape training curriculum. Dr. Hutchins was stationed in Washington,
DC at the Naval Air Systems Command in 1978. His Naval career culminated in 1986 after four years as an
Assistant Professor in the Operations Research Department of the Naval Postgraduate
School in Monterey, CA, thus fulfilling 23 years of dedicated service and a lifelong
desire to teach.
After retiring from the Navy, Dr.
Hutchins provided human factors engineering support to FMC’s United Defense
Division in San Jose, CA (1986 – 1998); supported HFE Designworks on DARPA projects
as a research consultant incorporating his work with PTSD and POW studies
(2008-2011); and served as an Executive Coach for senior naval officers
attending the Navy Corporate Business Course at the NPS's Office of
Executive Learning (2009-2011).
In 2001, Dr. Hutchins received an M.A. from
Chapman University in Marriage & Family Therapy. He began a private psychotherapy
practice in Pacific Grove, CA, specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of adults
with ADHD. Dr. Hutchins guided
clients toward enjoying productive lives by developing skills to overcome complexities
brought on by ADHD. He continued
seeing clients until his recent cancer diagnosis.
Dr. Hutchins was spiritually connected to the
unparalleled beauty of the Monterey Peninsula and made this area home for the
past 30 years. His free time was
spent hiking with his dog Goldie throughout the lands maintained by the Big Sur
Land Trust and along miles of trails in Fort Ord.
Dr. Hutchins is survived by his two daughters,
three younger sisters, four grandchildren, one great-grandchild and several
nieces, nephews, extended family and many friends who remember "Chuck" for his loving, easy-going nature and energetic approach to living.
