My Story

Donald Hamilton Berry

New York City, Saturday, February 9, 2008.   Donald H. Berry, 78, of passed away peacefully at Lenox Hill Hospital. He was born in Salem in 1930, son of Charles and Irene (Skinner) Berry. Attending schools in Salem and Beverly, he graduated in 1949 from Beverly High School, where he was a member of the track team, and co-captain of BHS football team which won the 1948 state championship.  He also attended the Museum of Fine Art School in Boston. His career in Boston and New York included fine arts painting, theatre and television set design, special effects for stage and film, and stage, film and television acting.

He is survived by his wife, Louisa Anderson Berry, their sons, Nicholas Donald Berry and Robin Hamilton Berry, all of NYC; his children by his first marriage to Bertha Gadbois: Jayne Katherine Berry of Searsmont, ME, Michael Hamilton Berry of Devon,UK, Heidi Anne Berry of Hove, UK, Christopher James Berry and grandson, Tomi James, of London, UK, brothers Franklin and William Berry, and a sister, Eleanor Kerth.

He will be remembered for his gentle disposition, exceptional intelligence and impish wit, his multi-faceted creativity and curiosity, and a deeply spiritual nature. His ancestry included Native Penobscot from Maine, early settlers of Essex County, participants in the American Revolution, Abolitionist Movement, Civil War and World War I. During World War II, he served his country in the Merchant Marines. He was active with the Boy Scouts of America and Central Presbyterian Church of NYC, where he taught Sunday school. His presence will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
