My Story

Dr. Rafael (Yaakov Shimi ben Yosef) Segev Died at the age of 31 surrounded by his family and friends at his home in Harrison, New York. He died of Heart failure as a result of AIDs related Liver Cancer and KS. Rafael was born in Tel Aviv, Israel and lived in Zikron Yaakov until the age of 15. His Family relocated to the United States at the time of his Fathers` untimely death.  Due to Pancreatic Cancer, at the age of 39.  He moved with his Mother and two Sisters to stay with Family in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. His Mother remarried sixteen months after his Fathers` death. And the Family relocated to West Palm Beach. Rafael attended Princeton University, New Jersey as an undergraduate. Graduating Phi beta Kappa. And then Columbia University as a Graduate Student. And then as a Medical Student. Rafael was an Intern with Lenox Hill Hospital, and a Resident in Cardiology at New York Hospital. He also studied for a semester in Israel, and the following semester in Russia. Rafael was diagnosed with HIV at the age of 24. He participated in many experimental medications used in Treating HIV/AIDs. This was believed to be the result of his developing Liver Cancer in his last year of Residency. He was planning to relocate to San Francisco for his Fellowship at Stamford University.
Rafael was a kind, generous, humorous, loving spirit. True to his Tradition. Making many welcome in his Manhattan Condo in observing Shabbat and serving a dish (catered, of course) for anyone who showed. He pursued his Career as a Physician with a Knowledge and Compassion lacking in many of todays younger students.
Rafael is survived by His Mother, Chaya Mizrahi -  Zuckerman, of West Palm Beach, Florida. His Sister Naomi (and Husband Yoel) in Lawrence, New York. His Sister Sara (and Husband Shmuel) in Alameda, California. He was Uncle to 7 nieces and nephews. An Ex - Fiance, Bethany. And a Partner in San Jose, California. And myself, his first cousin, Rabbi Scott Segev of Tel Aviv, Israel.
His Closest and Dearest friends - Dr. Amy, Emmanuel & Philip, Doug & Lenny, Michael & Jonathan, Sam & Marc, David & Melissa, Harvey & Devorah, Roberta & Libby, Ellen & Nancy, Steve & Scott.
Rafael was a Board Member for GMHC, AMFAR (Focusing on fundraising), Gave weekly lessons in Public Health regarding Protection from HIV/AIDs to many High School Students in the five boroughs. He was an avid attendee of auctions. Had a love for Theatre and Song. And was Founding Director of Hizzug Emunah of NYC. Encouraging Gay and Lesbian Couples to return to tradition. On Rosh Hashana Rafael would be seen in many of New York City Hospitals blowing the Shofar for the Jewish infirmed.
He is missed. He lived with passion.  He gave love. His Memory shall always be for a blessing.
