The Life and Times of Dr. Rahel Getaneh

Dr. Rahel Getaneh was born to Woubayehu Deressa and the late Colonel Getaneh Rebbi on January 15, 1960 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. She completed her primary and secondary education at Nazareth School in Addis Ababa. Shortly thereafter, Dr. Rahel moved to the former Republic of Czechoslovakia to continue her education, earning a degree in medicine at The Palacky University. Upon completing her studies in Czechoslovakia, Rahel spent two years in Mannheim, Germany.

In 1990, she moved to New Orleans, Louisiana, where she built her home and family. It was there that Dr. Rahel married her college sweetheart Feseha Makonnen and became mother to Solen Feseha Makonnen and Yohanna Feseha Makonnen.

The center of family and friends, Rahel created and nurtured a loving home and community wherever she lived. She was blessed with the gift of unconditional love, patience and guidance. A friend, confidant, and counselor to many, Rahel was loved and cherished by everyone who crossed her path. Despite the sometimes challenging circumstances she faced, Rahel personified dignity, grace and courage. In our hearts and minds, we will always carry the love, warmth and disarming smile she bestowed upon us.

Rahel is survived by her children, Solen and Yohanna Feseha Makonnen; husband, Feseha Makonnen; mother, woubayehu Deressa; brothers, Sirak Getaneh, Abraham Getaneh, Michael Getaneh and Mesfin Getaneh; and loving family and friends.
