My Story

Hardial Singh Bains arrived in the UK in 1965 after spending the early part of his life in Punjab.

There were already signs of the high achieving and focused individual he would become during his school and college years. As a boy, he had also witnessed first hand the events of partition in 1947 when the entire family moved to the Eastern side of Punjab from their home in West Punjab.

Hardial married Ranjit in 1963 and Harinder was born in Rahon after his father had left for the UK. The family was united in 1966 and settled in Derby, with Paramjit being born in Belper in 1967. It was the start of a long and enduring association with the Midlands city.

Hardial, despite already being a qualified teacher in India, had to retrain once in the UK. He embarked on a long career in the education system, eventually becoming an assistant Director of Education at Derbyshire County Council. Many friendships were formed during these years but particularly touching was the reaction of previous students when encountering their ex teacher after many years. Hardial Bains had the rare gift of bringing out the best in his students, while maintaining consistent levels of discipline.

Hardial and Ranjit took similar pride in the education of their two children. Harinder is a Sports Medicine Physician in Australia and Paramjit is a barrister in Birmingham. In his later years, Hardial showed himself to be an adorable grandfather to Symrhun, Amar, Nau Nihal, Daleep and Karam. He loved travelling and we particularly cherish the four trips he made to Australia to spend with his three growing grandsons.

Hardial was enjoying excellent health when he suffered a serious head injury in a freak accident in 2012. It is testament to the man that despite such late adversity in his life, he was nevertheless able to maintain such a positive persona. Ranjit remained devoted to the end and was supported throughout by Hardial's brother Sucha and her brother Tajinder Atwal.

A loving and inspirational man, he will be deeply missed by us all.
