My Story

Jesse Weldon Essary was 19 years old when he was killed on September 14, 2008. My husband and I had ran a paper route the night before and there had been severe thunderstorms so it took us longer than usual to get done because of downed trees and power lines. We got home around 9 or 9:30 and went to sleep. Normally i would have been up around 11 or 12 but getting in later i guess i slept longer. At 12:30 we was woke up by kids screaming. At first it just sounded like they was playing around so my husband went outside to see what was going on. I was getting dressed and suddenly i could hear what was being screamed. They was screaming over and over as loud as they could Jesse is dead Jesse is dead. I stopped and thought oh my god that can not be true. Right then my husband runs in and says come on Jesse has been hurt. I grab the car keys and go outside where there are 8 to 10 kids all screaming and crying. I cant figure out how to open the car how to unlock the car I am so scared. My husband takes the keys and we go 2 blocks to the scene and i see my youngest son Colby 16 walking away from Jesse holding his head. Colby had beat the ambulance there and seen Jesse. I see Jesse laying on the ground not moving. I cant figure out how to get out of the car it wont unlock. The officer comes to my door i finally get it to open and he pushes me back in and tries to shut the door but i finally get out of the car. He tells me Jesse died instantly. I gotta go see him i can fix it i got to touch him. They wont ever let me see him. So they tell us what happened. Jesse and 8 to 10 other kids was riding bikes on a residential street with no sidewalks they were about half way up the street and a 18 wheeler delivering milk to Kraft foods pulled onto the road they was on. The truck was fully loaded and as it was passing the kids Jesse lost control of his bike and fell under the last 8 tires of the tanker. He suffered multiple tramatic injuries. We had to have a closed casket funeral. I never got to see him at all that day. However the day of the funeral i did make them at least open it up so i could at least touch him thru the body bag. I have never felt such pain. I need him back so bad. He will be so missed. I love him so much. Jesse graduated from high school just 4 months before he died
