My Story

Dad was born in Glasgow Scotland feb 1930, he was the youngest of 8 children. He grew up in the scottish tenaments but he was happy. Dad joined the english army when he was 18, not happy with them he then joined the Australian army and moved to Melbourne. Dad did he's time in the army with tours of Duty in Malaysia and Korea he also was in Singapore. Dad met my mother in the army as she was a member of the CMF. They were married in Sydney June 1969., they bought a house in Bankstown and their first child arrived in Dec 1972 a son, two daughters followed in 1974 and 1975. While in Bankstown dad opened up the Cluniebrae Kennels were he bred boxers. Dad and mum moved us to Queensland in 1982 for mum,s health but it was the best move ever. Dad worked as a storeman for a Tafe and did so until his retirement. In 1987 dad had his first heart attack which knocked him for 4 months after open heart surgery. In 1993 he had his second heart attack. This time it was open heart surgery with heart valve replacement. We were told he might not make it. This was the year he became a grandfather for the first time. 6 more grandchildren were to follow in 1996, 1997, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2005.  Dad also had problems with the circulation in his legs and in 1998 he had his left leg amputated below the knee. This did not work and 2 weeks later it was amputated above the knee. Dad recovered from this hickup to get back into life. He had a second amputation this time it was he's right leg in 2004. Dad spent six months in hospital but made it out 1 week before his first daughters wedding and walked (wheeled) her proudly down the aslie. In the last few years of dads life he indured failing kidneys and in 2006 we were told he had 3 months to live. Stubbon as always dad was not ready to go. He spent the next 3 years in and out of the hospital with many health problems but he never gave up. He loved the Harry Potter books and the movies and reread and watched them often. On feb 2010 he celebrated his 80th birthday surrounded by family, he stated that night to me "I told you I would make it to 80" with a smile on he's face. Dad's health stated to really go down hill and we all knew the time was close. In nov 2010 dad was admitted to the hospital for the last time. We all came in to say our goodbyes and we never left him alone. Now my father had a wicked sense of humour and on the last day he slept all of the time. My sister and my son were in the room and we were joking with each other and everytime we did dad made a sound has if he was laughing. Dad went quite and we went over to see him, it was time. I held my father's hand and told him how much I loved him and how much we will miss him but it was time for him to go. My father squeezed my hand one last time then passed away peacefully.
