My Story

This website is dedicated to the memory of Kimberly L. Nelson, who was murdered at the age of 19 by Gary Ridgway, the "Green River killer" in Seattle, Washington State.  Her exact birthdate is unknown, but she disappeared from the Pacific Highway South near the Ben-Carol Motel, located at 14110 Pacific Highway South, on November 1, 1983.  The Pacific Highway South was also known as the "Sea-Tac strip," which was a known stroll for prostitutes.

Born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Kim Nelson dropped out of Pioneer High School in the 11th grade and made her way to Seattle.  According to research in Ann Rule's book, GREEN RIVER RUNNING RED, Kim may have been pregnant at the time of her disappearance, but this has never been proved.  She was last seen by a fellow streetwalker, Paige Elizabeth Miley, who is at this time serving a jail sentence in Nevada for burglary.  On November 1st, 1983, Miley and Nelson sat together on a bus bench in the morning, waiting for a likely customer to come by.  Miley picked up a "trick" first and left Kim sitting there on the bus bench. When Paige Miley returned a few minutes later, Kim was missing and she never saw her again.

A day or so after Kim disappeared, Paige Miley was waiting in the same area and was approached by a man in a pickup truck.  He wanted to know where her "tall blonde friend was".  This made Paige Miley very suspicious. The time she'd seen Kim Nelson, who was about 6' tall and had bleached blonde hair, she had been sitting in that same area with Kim, and she figured the man must have seen them together. Something about this man made Paige very uneasy and she reported him to the police. She also insisted that she gave them a license plate number, which the police must have lost.  Twenty years later, once Ridgway was identified as a suspect, Paige Miley was interviewed again and even hypnotized to see if she could recall the license plate number. She could remember only part of it, not enough to be of help to the police.

Paige and Kim actually had not known each other very long. The two shared a heroin habit, which was very demanding and required them to be out on the street making money to get their next "fix".  The pimps of Kim and Paige were friends, and they moved the women into the Ben-Carol Motel, which was used a great deal by streetwalkers at that time; during the early 1980s, prostitution was rife in that area of Seattle, Washington State.  They thought it would be a good base from which these two girls could work and make money.

Although Kim had her problems, she did love her family.  She is known to called her parents in Ann Arbor, Mich., one day in October 1983 to say she would be home for Christmas.  Unfortunately, she never showed up or phoned.  Kim's parents were later notified by a detective on the Green River Task Force that their daughter's remains had been found near North Bend, Washington; she was identified through dental charts because her remains were skeletonized. By that time, she had been missing for well over two years.   An autopsy determined that she died of "homicidal violence of undetermined origin."

The day before she disappeared, Kim Nelson had been released from the King County Jail after a prostitution arrest.  During the month of Sept, 1983, she was arrested three times for prostitution.

Kim' s family, according to Linda Barker, a victim's advocate, has been stunned by the news since her disappearance and her father has since passed away.  They were certain that something had indeed happened to her, since they had not heard from her for so long, and it was apparently unlike her not to keep in touch with her family.

Rest in peace, Kim.  This website is to honor your memory.
