My Story

This memorial is being launched in honor of Mother whose Memorial Service was on January 20, 1992.  Would that be 20 years ago now?  It hardly seems possible.

We laughed and cried and hugged that day. But we knew that at the moment of her passing, the essence of who she was had left and gone to her final reward. And she had left some of the wonder of who she was with each of us...lucky for us!!!!
For me personally, I know that determination, that strength, that calm in the midst of a storm that she possessed...when I am able to muster that up, when a 'SITUATION' arises...I know it is that piece of her that she left ...so many times I quote her...two things she said over and over and never joikingly...these words:
remember....'THIS TOO SHALL PASS.'  and, 'KEEP ON KEEPING ON'....Both of those are still ever present in my life each day.

There have been so many things I wanted to share with her over the years...and to do that...I stepped outside and felt the gentle breeze kiss my face or ran my hands through loam...and I talked to her. And I could feel her. listening...knowing...and so I was comforted.
There is no doubt that she has walked with us through the tough times in our lives..and when I say WE I mean all of us...her daughters, her grandsons, and granddaughters, her greatgrandsons, and greatgranddaughters, her nieces, and nephews...anyone whose life was touched by her.

She was an A M A Z  I N G woman, Mother, wife, daughter, aunt, grandmama...and I only wish that my grandchildren had known her and her beloved Papa.

She taught us about be patient...which she was to a fault.
She taught us that not one of us was 'better' than another...that in God's eyes we are equal.
She taught us to love...each other and to love the land ...to love each other enough to care about one another and to love the land enough to take care of it.
One other really important thing she taught was forgivemess. What an important lesson. She said,
"You know, there are going to be those along the way who make mistakes. Or, at least they will seem like mistakes to you. But remember, you do not know why someone else does what they do. So, if it arises in your lifetime that someone does something that seems to damage your relationship with them, please, let go of it. Forgive them and move on. For you know, once they are gone, they are gone and you cannot say words to them that you wish you might have.' And, I have found over the years that is one of the hardest things she taught us, but, it is one of the most important. To really forgive someone can be very difficult but once forgiveness happens then all of the injury of the past can be let go. And she would want that for all of her family.

No passage, no verse can sum up who Martha Ruth was...she was selfless, forgiving, wise, warm, gentle, kind. patient, understanding...no one word can say who she was...but if you knew her, your life was changed....she made a difference in her little corner of the world.

So, Mother, this is for YOU. We honor and love you as we always have.
