My Story

NIC

Nicholas Bernard Mulloy was born in London in 1964. He was my little brother and although I am only two and a half years older than him he will always be my little brother.
But most of all Nic was special. There was a light in his eyes and a pureness in his heart I have never found in anyone else.

During his short life Nic achieved much despite being plagued by ill health and tragedy.
When he was only 7 years old he was stricken by diabetes on a ship in the middle of the Atlantic - we almost lost Nic then but against all odds he survived.
Nic was special.

As a young boy Nic loved reading. his exceptional brain absorbed books by the dozen. He was interested in big themes - politics - spiritualism - history.
He knew much but was a quiet observer. Yet Nic was passionate about things and loved a good conversation.
Anyone who has spent time talking to Nic has come away feeling energized and a lot of people spoke to Nic.
You see - Nic was special.

Nic and I were very close right up until our teen years until our mutual geographical wanderings separated us for long periods, years at a time.
Yet each time we met again we just picked up where we had left off and compared notes.
He was a voyager, a modern day explorer, a poet, a gypsy and most of all he was a teacher. A very good teacher.
And his students knew Nic was special.

In Hong Kong in the late 80's Nic & I had found the women we were to marry. Indeed Nic was there the day I met Wan almost 20 years ago.
But tragedy struck Nic when Denise died not far from here.
Nic loved deeply and this loss hit him hard.

Nic went through a very rough period but pulled through and fell in love again.
Nic and Genevieve were soul-mates, best friends and deeply in love.
They worked together, lived together and loved together.
He was to marry Genevieve this summer and settle down.
It would have been very special.

Life had again been unkind to Nic as a combination of Thyroid problems and impossible bureaucracy tested Nic's ability to stand up to adversity yet again.
But he did.
I told you Nic was special.

Nic's  outlook on life was that each day was a challenge to be treated with good humour and a healthy dose of cynicism and optimism.
He never complained - everything was OK - life was cruel to him and he made do with what he was given.
He lived, loved, traveled and taught enjoying all of the people he met along the way and touching them with his uniqueness.
But like an extravagant feast or a firework display or a good book it always ends too soon.

My brother Nic was very very special person
