My Story

The world's most famous New Zealander, Sir Edmund Hillary passed away at Auckland City Hospital at 9am on Friday, January 11.

The inspirational New Zealander's life was marked by grand achievements. He was the first man to climb Mount Everest (with Sherpa guide Tenzing Norgay), was Knighted by the Queen, joined the Commonwealth Trans-Antartic expedition, was appointed New Zealand High Commissioner, was the first living New Zealander to be featured on a banknote and devoted much of his life to aiding the mountain people of Nepal - never forgetting the mountain and people that helped propel him to worldwide fame, and whom he had a deep admiration for.

Hillary spent decades pouring energy and resouces from his own fund-raising efforts into Nepal, through the Himalayan Trust - which he founded in 1962. The funds raised helped build hospitals, schools, airfields and health clinics.

It was on a visit to Nepal that his first wife, Louise, and daughter Belinda died in a light plane crash on March 31, 1975. Hillary remarried in 1990, to June Mulgrew, former wife of adventurer colleague and close friend Peter Mulgrew, who died in a passenger plane crash in the Antarctic. He is survived by his wife, children Peter and Sarah and several grandchildren.

In later years Hillary summed up his life by saying, "In some ways I believe I epitomise the average New Zealander: I have modest abilities, I combine these with a good deal of determination, and I rather like to succeed."

A state funeral in Auckland will be held for Sir Edmund Hillary on 22 January and the Sherpas plan to hold a service in the Himalayas for the man they called a 'second father'.

Sir Edmund Hillary, a devoted conservationist, humanitarian, explorer and an inspiration to all. May you Rest In Peace.
