My Story

Dad's story begins in Timpson, Texas in November of 1927, the youngest of 10 kids born to Thomas Pleasant Hughes Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Hughes. They were a very close, hard-working family.

Dad served in the US Navy during WWII. He was a very quiet, but highly intelligent man, and went on to earn a degree from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. He was hired by IBM right after college, where he retired after 30+ years of service.

He married Barbara Gage in December of 1960, and together they adopted me in November of 1969. Dad enjoyed being outdoors, camping and fishing. He was a very sweet natured, kind man and never had an enemy or a bad word to say about anyone. He adored my Mother and they were true soul mates. After his retirement, when I was 12, we moved from Houston back to Timpson where he grew up. He built our house himself and started his own fix-it business; working on air conditioning, plumbing, and other household repairs for people.

When my Mom fell ill with cancer he devoted himself to caring for her. He was so wonderful and did so much to make her happy and comfortable - even making a cooling device for their tent,  to make it possible to take her camping in Branson, Missouri while she was still able.

When Mom passed, I felt like the biggest part of my Dad went with her. He was so in love with her and he was lost without her. We lost him - I believe to a broken heart - just a couple years after her.

I am so proud of the man my Dad was, and I think I am a better husband and father because of him.

I love you Dad - and I miss you terribly.
