My Story

Where do I begin the story of my hero? One that stretches over fifty decades... Obviously I won't start at the very beginning, I mean, I only made my debut twenty years later! I will however try my best to relay all the stories, jokes and tragedies as long as my memory doesn't fail me...

My father was a typical Afrikaans speaking youngster. He grew up in the Marken-area, which is situated in the Northern Province of South Africa. He shared his childhood with his father, mother and two brothers. His father, Piet, was a honest, hard working man. He juggled between farming and construction work. My father and his eldest brother Frik soon joined my grandfather in the construction industry. These three men never shied away from hard work, and getting down and dirty was never a problem. I can think of a million times that my father has told me stories from his youth... Changing tyres on a huge construction truck... AFTER a whole day of blood, sweat and tears to help create a new, black, smooth tar road...

My father was also a very talented man in the musical department. He played in the drum majorettes, with his youngest brother Johann soon to follow in his footsteps! My uncle Johann was so inspired by his older brother, that he decided to put in a 110% effort, as to not disappoint his "ou boet". This resulted in him ending up a SA Champ drumming his way into life. It is certainly not a well known fact, but my father was quite the master of woodwork. He used to love the process of turning a lifeless, plain piece of wood into a piece of perfection. He had all the fancy tools, but sadly time was the one thing that came between him and his passion.

My uncle Frik and grandfather both passed away even before I was born, so forgive me for not being able to give you more history on them. I know that my grandfather passed away in hospital. My grandmother, Lea, was by his side, comforting him as he slippe into the otherside. My uncle Frik died at a young age, this of course meant that my father was now the man of the house. It made him very proud to be the real "ou boet" for Johann. This was also not a lighthearted matter for him, he knew all about the responsibility that came with the title...

Both my father and uncle went into military service, as it was still compulsary in those days. My dad absolutely hated the army. He was too much of a free spirit. His naughty alter ego made it more bearable for him to endure. My favourite story is still the one of him, another unlucky soul, and Brooklax... I'm sure you can imagine the outcome...

Over the years, both my father and uncle firmly settled themselves in the construction industry. Working just about everywhere in our country, but also venturing into Africa. My father loved working in the open everyday. Always dressed in his staple khaki clothing and HiTech boots. Never really liked a tie and suit... Simply grinned and beard it on sundays for church...

My father was quite the avid photographer! He had a soft spot for flowers and sunrises. Could never resist walking past a pretty, colourful flower without zooming in and capturing the beauty. My father came alive in the early mornings... You could see the passion playing in his dark, chocolate brown eyes. He always made me stop and listen to the birds. Then he would go on about how beautiful it was, and sometimes even recorded it! We must have taken at least a thousand photographs of sunrises together... His favourite part was the really intense pink and red flames across the sky, at the first
