My Story

Eulogy from Eric Krause - Nov 22nd, 2010

My Yiddishe Mama – my Chaykale

Chaya means, LIFE – She gave us life and she was our life!
Mum was born in 1921 in the town of Losisc in Poland. Chaya  Ribkowski was  one of 5 children.   She is the last surviving member of the Ribkowski family.  Her story is about survival  and total dedication to her family.
She  survived the Holocaust in a work camp in Sibera where she met our father, Reuben Krause.  They were married in 1944.  I was born in Germany in 1946.  I was three years old when we came to Australia by boat, ‘the Sorriento.’   Shirley was born in 1952 and when she contracted polio at 14 months Mum was totally dedicated to caring for her, setting up a new life in Australia, running the market shoe business with my father and looking  after the household.
When I got married in 1970 to Esther, Mum and Dad welcomed her into the family and treated her like their own daughter.  Esther was very shy, but Mum was gentle and kind and overtime, they became very close.  She developed a uniquely loving, but feisty relationship with Regina, Esther’s mum.
My father became ill in the late 60’s and died in 1971. My mother took on all responsibilities.  She looked after us, ran the business and when she was 50, she got her driver’s licence. She was determined to create the best life for us that she could.

At that time, she had many suitors.   She would invite these men to Shabbat and then call me afterwards to get my opinion; “What you think Eric”?
I would always say NO because I compared them to my father.  One day, she was courted by a young suitor – a sprightly, handsome man, named Jack Jeruzalski.  We knew that he was the one. We could feel the chemistry between them. When he asked us for my mother’s hand, we had no hesitation in giving it to him. This beautiful, inspiring relationship has lasted 30 years. Jack has been like a father to us and most importantly, he made my mum very happy. They travelled together, laughed together and loved being in each other’s company.  When mum lost her sight 14 years ago and her health deteriorated, Jack did not leave her side for a minute.   It was true love.
Despite her illnesses, she still tried to care for him ...made sure he ate well,  took his medication and had some time for himself.   He reminds us constantly;  She is my life, my love and my soul  - my neshuma!  The last 10 years have been very difficult, but they never stopped talking about their devotion to each other giggling and kissing like two young lovers.
Mum adored her grandchildren, Jeremy, Dana and Sim. They bought so much happiness into her life.  She would always call me straight after they visited to give me a minute by minute description of what they talked about.
She wanted her grandchildren to be happy and healthy.. a bei guzunt, she would always say.  They gave her so much Nachas.  She enjoyed each milestone with quiet contentment and a warm glow of happiness.   She delighted in the marriage of Tanya and Jeremy and lived to see the children of her grandchildren;  Joely and Abi  whom she adored.  Although, she was unable to come to Israel for Simi and Shlomi’s wedding, she rejoiced in her own quiet way at the growth of their love and commitment to each other.
Dana recently introduced her to Eitan and despite her deteriorating health, she was still able to make the observation that he is a ‘fine yad’.
When  Jack and mum married,  our family grew.   Jack’s son Myer, his late wife Emily and Vicki also came into our family and were nutured and loved by mum. When Myer married Lana, mum opened her heart and home to Lana and Jack and Mum became grandparents to three beautiful children; Jacqueline, Rebecca and Robert.     Last night at the hospital, Myer expressed the beauty of mum and her goodness.  He said that her heart is pure.    That’s our mum – pure of heart and pure in nature.
What have I learned from my yiddishe mama?; look after your family first, follow through whatever you undertake,   and be a mensch.
I love you Mum and I hope that you are no longer suffering and you are now at peace.   We have been blessed to have had you with us into your 90th year.
Your memory and gentle soul will always be with me.

Eulogy from Shirley Glance - Nov 22nd, 2010

Mum you have always been the sounding board for my life
You brought me up to be the person I am
Your commitment during my long period of childhood illness meant running from doctor to doctor, working the markets and having to run a family home
You never complained and never ceasing nurturing me.

While I was sitting with you in your last few hours I could only think of the total dedication you have always shown to your children, grandchildren and great grandchildren helping us to be better people.
Your remarriage to Jack brought additional focus, a new and welcomed family and a sharing or your unlimited affections

Mums later years were marked with vision impairment which dealt a harsh blow to her independence.
We made the difficult decision for her to go to Emmy Monash
The staff always pampered her daily, dressing her up like a lady, combing her hair and attending to her makeup and restoring her dignity.

I’m going to miss Mum’s guidance
I’m going to miss her wisdom
I’m going to miss her encouragement at every turn
And I’m going to miss her pride at each family achievement
But most of all I’m going to miss her love

Look down on us with pride, because we will do our best to make you proud.
