My Story

My father passed away on 16 Dec 09just 6 short weeks after finding out he had Stage 4 lung cancer that had metastisized to the bone.  Once diagnosed, he was given 9-15 months.  I guess the cancer had a mind of it's own and only gave him 6 weeks.  He opted for 10 sessions of radiation treatment to shrink the tumor in his lung since it was pressing on his windpipe hoping this would help his breathing.  It did for a little while.  Growing up, my father was a strict man, but also a very loving father.  As I got older, I understood more how hard it was to be a good parent.  This he was!  He maintained his humor all the way to the endhe was an amazing man.  Here is his obituary:

John H. Vida, 82, Pulaski, passed away Dec. 16, 2009 at Oswego Hospital after a short illness.

He was born July 2, 1927 on Staten Island.  He graduated June 6, 1951 from the New York School of Embalming and Restorative Art, receiving honors for his restorative art.  He worked in New York City, Ausable Forks, and Staten Island before purchasing the Taylor Funeral Home in Pulaski in 1967, retiring in July 2008.  He also formed the John H. Vida Monument Company and Ye Old Attic Antiques.

He was a former member of the Pulaski Lions Club, the Service Club, Knights of Columbus, several bowling leagues, the Mad River Club, and the Albion Fish and Game Club.  He enjoyed golf and playing cards with his poker buddies.

On April 18, 1954, he married the former Mildred Wade in New York City, his wife of 55 years, who survives him.  He is also survived by son John M. (Jack) (Deanna) of Lacona, son David (Susan) of Bridgeport, daughter Jill E. Goodwin (Dale) of Pulaski, and son Peter S. of Pulaski, his sister Jeanne (Pinky) Cole of Staten Island, five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Memorial services were held Sunday, Dec 20, at Sacred Heart Chapel, Unity Acres, Orwell, with the Rev. Robert Jones officiating.  Burial will be private.  Arrangements by Summerville Funeral Home, Sandy Creek.

Contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society.
