My Story

Danny Lee Fenson was born November 2nd 1948 the second son of Robert Junior Fenson and Ruth Nancy Jane Grimes. He went to Manchester Grade School, and graduated from East High School in 1967. Danny worked with his father at the Standard Service Station while in High School. After graduating Danny went to work again with his father at Blacks, Sivall’s and Bryson until he was drafted on the 14th of February 1968. Because of his ROTC training and dedication in high school, Danny qualified to join the US Marines Corp and that is what he chose. The choice to join the US Marine Corps came as no surprise to Danny’s family because as a little boy Danny would play Military with his mother’s bobby pins. Thus began Danny’s military career that would last for a good portion of his life. Danny Completed his Basic Training in Quantico, Virginia on August 8th, 1969. Danny would tell his family of a story about when he was in Basic Training of when he was training in the gas chambers and took off his mask to see if he could breathe, Danny passed out and had to be carried to safety, but he never did that again. After training, Danny was stationed in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii then Cherry Point, North Carolina then in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Danny completed more training while in Camp LeJeune and some in Washington, D.C. Danny also had the chance to see other places such as the Virgin Isles, Vietnam, and the Philippines. While in the Philippines, Danny married Christina Alberto. From this marriage Danny would adopt Christina’s first son, Allen Eugene Fenson, and on August 26, 1975 Danny would be the father of her second son, Michael William “Billy” Fenson. Danny was honorably discharged on February 15th, 1977, again on January 30th, 1983, and again on August 16th, 1984. After each of those discharges Danny would reenlist. Danny moved up the ranks from a Private to Private First Class on August 1st, 1969, to Lance Corporal on April 21st, 1970, to Corporal on March 1st, 1971, to Sergeant on June 5th, 1973, to Staff Sergeant on April 1st, 1976. In the 70’s, Danny was even in the Military Police until January 15th, 1979. Throughout Danny’s Military career he received many honors, medals, and badges which include: National Defense Service Medal, Vietnamese Service Medal With One Star and With Two Stars, Rifle Marksmanship Badge, Pistol Sharpshooter Badge, His 1st Good Conduct Medal with Three Stars on February 14th, 1972, His 2nd Good Conduct Medal on February 14th, 1976, His 3rd Good Conduct Medal on February 14th, 1978, His 2nd or 3rd Good Conduct Medal was a Five Star, Sea service Deployment Ribbon, Meritorious Unit Citation, Philippine Presidential Unit Citation, and M-16 Rifle Marksman Badge. On February 1st, 1989, with the deepest respect and admiration of the officers and men in the service, SSGT Danny L. Fenson retired from the US Marine Corps after 20 years of honorable and faithful active service. After retirement from the Military, Danny would relocate to Kansas City, MO to be home with his family. Danny would go onto do some security work at the Business Men Association, other security jobs, some maintenance work, and his passion, DJ-ing.On August 27th, 2005 Danny would begin his battle with a dementia related illness which would leave him needing 24 hour care which he received the best at Blue Hills resting Home, which became Danny‘s final home. During the five years he struggled with this illness, he was able to spend many happy moments with his siblings, mother, nieces, nephews, son, and grandchildren. On August 10th, 2010, Danny would be diagnosed with advanced small cell lung cancer. Vitas Hospice Care was called in to make Danny comfortable for his last days. For six days, Danny battled this illness with his sisters Nancy Bristow and Sarah VanBibber at his side. Sadly, on August 16th, 2010, Our Heavenly Father decided that it was time for Danny to join his Lord and departed loved ones in heaven. On August 13th, 2010, SSGT Danny L Fenson gave his final salute to his loving sisters Nancy and Sarah, so I would ask that we all take a moment now to salute SSGT Danny L Fenson.
