My Story

Dad, Yeh yeh, Kong Kong or Meng Yuen, those were how he was addressed; to his friends, even some relatives, it was Eddie. To Poh poh it was Meng Yuen, if not "your father".  Where and when did he use Eddie, goodness knows.  It is highly doubtful that his mother gave him that name.

Dad was a modern man. He learnt to speak English, in times when English was less common than local dialects.  He had a vinyl record gramophone, he sashayed to waltz, foxtrots and chacha.  He crooned to sentimentals, Nat King Cole, Sinatra, Dean Martin and so on, bringing along with him Mom (Poh2) for the ride.  He was a natty dresser - his photographs spoke volumes of this indulgence. More than that, he enrolled his children into English Saints and IJ schools. He believed in education (English) as the key to the future. He opened up to modern changes in the world (celebrating Christmas, buying the latest technological gadgets, like TVs, tape recorders, cameras, cars, traveling widely, all these since the 50s) rather than insisted on tradition.

Whether that was a regret, one can only say of his growing insistence of the family in recent times - Just Connect!
