My Story

Former long time Bremerton resident Elnora M. Marweg, age 98, of Perham, Minnesota, crossed the high golden bridge to meet her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, April 30, 2017.
Elnora was born the daughter of Henry and Emilie (Buthje) Marweg on December 15, 1918 at home in rural Dent, MN. Elnora was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church of Dora Township.
In 1942 she relocated to Yakima, Washington, where her older sister Erna lived, and went to work at Yakima Steam Laundry. In January 1943 she came to Bremerton and went to work at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard cafeteria during the World War 2 years. After the war she worked for several years as a hostess at the Officers Club and then returned to the cafeteria in 1951, retiring in 1981. She worked a second job as a popular waitress at the Kitsap Golf and Country Club from 1963 to 1989. After her second retirement from the golf club the still spry senior worked part time as a waitress for a number of years at Granny’s Pantry in Silverdale and then at Larson’s Restaurant in the Perry Avenue Mall.

Although her job in the shipyard was not a high paying government position, she was careful with her money and lived well and comfortably.   Elnora was always a tasteful and stylish dresser with a large wardrobe of quality clothes. She wore her hair in a classic blonde French roll updo for many years.

Elnora managed without a car in Bremerton from 1943 till 1957, living at the Helena Apartments (now Milan Apartments) on Burwell Street, a short distance from her cafeteria job. She indicated the bus system was very good during those years as a way for her to get around town. At the urging of her mother she bought her first car in 1957 at age 38. It was a green 1947 Plymouth Special Deluxe four door. She always enjoyed a nice car after that and was a fan of Chrysler products. Her next car was a sporty seafoam green 1960 Plymouth Fury convertible with big fins.   A turquoise 1968 Dodge Polara and a pale lime green 1973 Dodge Polara were her wheels in later years followed by a race car looking two tone blue 1977 Dodge Charger Daytona when she was age sixty. She tried other brands of autos in the 1980’s and 90’s, but went back to a Chrysler product for her final vehicle, a 1997 Plymouth Voyager mini van.

Work at the PSNS cafeteria meant a shift that started from 4:00 to 5:00 am five days a week. It required an early bed time and the alarm going off at 3:00 to 3:30 am to get ready for work. Very disciplined, organized, and efficient, she managed the sandwich department at the Building 435 cafeteria through the 1950’s and 1960’s. In the late 1960’s she was offered a canteen manager position at Building 457 where she worked till shortly before her retirement when she moved to another canteen in the Naval Supply Building. She took a part time waitress job at the Kitsap Golf and Country Club in September 1963, working several nights a week. Her excellent work skills made her a favorite of many members until her retirement from the club in 1989. Working two jobs required careful time management and nap time. After lunch and getting off work at her cafeteria or canteen job around 1:00 pm, it was home to wash her face and take an hour or two nap, then a shower to revive, and then off to the golf club for the evening shift, getting home around between 8:00 and 9:00 pm, and then to bed. This was her life for many years. She never married but always felt she had “a good life”. After working two jobs for many years and reducing down to one part time job, she found time to have a pet. She enjoyed two separate cats in her later years as treasured and pampered companions.

Her annual vacation was a driving trip back to Minnesota in late summer to visit family with her sister Erna, who she picked up at her Yakima home on the way. Starting in the early 1960's, they watched the construction of the interstate highway system as they traveled the existing two lane highways during their annual trips. In the mid 1980's she made a memorable trip to Germany with her church group. Elnora loved her life and friends in Bremerton but in 2004 with her older sister, who had moved to Minnesota from Yakima, becoming frail, Elnora sacrificed for the sake of a family member and made the move back to Minnesota to assist her.

Elnora lived in rentals from 1943 until 1975 when she bought her first home.
It was a lovely single wide 1967 Elcar mobile home completely furnished in space # 3 at Camelot Mobile Home Park in East Bremerton. She took pride in keeping her home and yard neat and tidy and it was the show place of that area of the court for many years.
In Bremerton, Elnora was a member of Memorial Lutheran Church and was also a member of the Ladies Guild and the Altar Guild.

In late 2016 she felt her strength and appetite diminishing.   She realized she had enjoyed a very long life blessed with good health for most of that time. She also realized that the time to meet her Lord was approaching. As a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal Savior she was prepared to meet Him when He called.

Left to cherish Elnora's memory are nephew Roger (Jean) Marweg of Perham; nieces Karen (Darold) Eckert of Hoyt Lakes, MN, Sharon (Art) Hennig of Dallastown, PA, Lucinda Wegener of Wahpeton, ND, Kathryn (Don) Hanson of Hillsboro, ND, Carol Kern of Dent and Alverna Marweg of Dent; along with many great and great-great nieces and nephews as well as many friends including William L. Rieger of Bremerton, Washington.

Elnora was preceded in death by her parents; her brother Elmer Marweg; her sisters Esther (Marweg) Kern and Erna Marweg.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. John's Lutheran Church of Dora Cemetery Fund or a favorite charity such as the Bremerton Salvation Army.
A private family service will be held.
