She was the daughter of Mrs. Pauline Labaseire and Mr. Altenor Lawrence. Eve
was the eldest and had a brother Mr. Xavier Lawrence and three sisters Farris
Lawrence, Eleanor and Marian.
The Lord has blessed Eve with 10 children, 28 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild. She was a strict mother and grandmother but at the same time she poured all her descendant with lots of love and understanding. Which was one of her purposes in life: "To make people feel good about themselves and feed them". So when anyone arrived at Eve's home, be sure to have brought an empty stomach.... Eve always wanted to become a nurse.... so taking care of people was always a desire.
Eve was a very strong woman, both mentally, spiritually as physically. Some time around 1962 her back and legs started to have problems. This is why she was in a wheelchair. But even though she was in a wheelchair, she tried to move, walk and kept cooking etc. With the years passing by she had to stay more and more in the wheelchair. Up to 5 weeks before her passing she still gave her strength to stand, even if it was for 10 seconds.
Eve grew up a very humble and generous person. She truly blessed everyone in her own way. She was a Catholic Christian and loved Jesus her Lord and Savior very much.
She used to love to dance and gave Dominican dancing lessons in big houses every Saturday, before she moved to Curaçao in 1946.
Eve loved to be well dressed and loved jewelry. Bling it up. And yes... her favorite color was red. With red you will make Eve glad!
Eve loved her birthplace Dominica, and loved to tell stories of Dominica. So she told that Dominica has 366 rivers and that it's a mountainous island. Eve lived in Dominica till 1946. In 1945 she gave birth to her first child Angela. She worked for 13 years for a Mrs. Bridgewaters as the table setter.
Once she moved to Curaçao on a Colombian ship, she went to live in the town Valentine near Buenavista. Here she did domestic work for a Surinam family.
In 1947 - 1949 she went back to Dominica where she had her second child Esther. Due to work she moved back to Curaçao in 1949 so she could provide for her family, leaving her two baby girls behind in good care.
In 1949 she met her husband, the late Pablo Belefanti. They married on January 28th of 1950. Pablo or Pachipa as he was called used to drive a taxicab - taxi 41. He used to pick Eve up and drop her off at work daily. And so their love grew. Together they had 8 more children: Modesta (Kiki), Edgard (Gatchi), Felicia (Migala or Bila), Hermina (Mina), Sonia (Chocho or Soson), Yvonne (Vonchi), Basilio (Bas) and Sharine (Sha).
Eve loved to cook, especially Tomtom and okra. Her favorite TV shows were The Price is Right, Wrestling and Jerry Springer.
Her favorite foods were: Tomtom, breadfruit (yampeh), Dashin, Zabakah (avocado) and okra.
Her favorite drink was rum made from cane.
There was a story that Eve always told to us, so we could appreciate life, treat people right and do right by them; it's a true story. The story goes like this:
"One day I went to buy meat for my mother. To go to the butcher shop I had to walk very far, almost two hours. It was usual to go a buy and pay afterwards. Once I reach the shop I ask for the meat. There were more clients and out loud in front of all of them, the man said to me "And when are you planning to pay me?". I felt such shame. I took the meat back to my mother and was very saddened by this. The next day I did not go to school, but a went to the town, which was a 6 hours walk. I stayed at my aunt and every day I sold cassava powder in order to get money. At the end of the month I had all the money and went to pay the butcher. He was surprised and said "you are the first to actually pay me back as promised. That made me feel good.
"
Eve thank you for being such an inspiration and a blessing. Love you always mother, wela, mama...tantan.
