Fatima was born in Kenitra Morocco. Her courage was evident in her immigration to America with her husband Michael Deaner, two young sons Mouhsine and Hicham and infant daughter, Laura. While she spoke fluent English, passing the US Citizenship exam proved challenging. She held many positions in her early years in the country. Her determination and tenacity allowed herself to overcome her initial challenges. After living in Georgia, Connecticut, and New Jersey where her taste for life and compassion touched many people she settled in Virginia where her sister Hafida and nephew Farouk lived. Adopting her nephew showed how she always put her family first. She courageously joined the merchant marines and served on the USNS Sirius. She underwent rigorous physical training including fire fighting but was never discouraged. Her tour of the world included Spain, Dubai, and Saudi Arabia. Her dream of owning a restaurant was realized when, with the help from her family, she assumed ownership of a restaurant in downtown Norfolk called The Recovery Room. It served American food, had a die-hard lunch crowd and had traditional Moroccan nights, which included her famous cous-cous. When time allowed she would make trips back to Morocco and frequently traveled to North Carolina to spend time with her grandchildren Brianna and Brandon. She moved to NYC to be closer to her sisters Hafida and Khadija. She had a career as a nanny to several families that adored her. She joyfully witnessed the birth of her two grandsons Zayne and Aden. In Brooklyn, her brother Hamid joined by her after her last trip ‘home’ to Morocco. She took on a role as care taker for a family in the neighborhood who joined the many people that were touched by her compassion and energy for life. She had an infectious laugh that would make anyone smile.
