George Harold Pfau, Jr., 89, of San Francisco, CA,
passed in his sleep on November 2, 2013. His family gathered in the early
morning as the foghorns cleared him safe passage. Time was
spent honoring George's memory, sharing stories of his amazing
life and his boundless generosity.
At his
request, there will be no formal memorial service. His ashes will be
scattered on November 17th outside San Francisco Bay near the Golden
Gate.
Born
in Milwaukee, WI in 1924, George graduated from Thatcher in 1942 and Yale in
1948w with a colorful journey of military service in between that included
joining the American Field Service, as a civilian, in 1945. At
the end of the war George returned to Thacher to teach chemistry and
physics, and in 1949 moved to San Francisco. George loved his city by the bay, made friends
everywhere and cultivated meaningful connections across six remarkable decades.
Until his
retirement in 2010, George had a long career as a well respected
investment banker and financial advisor with White Weld, Merrill Lynch, Paine
Webber, UBS, and Morgan Stanley. George loved reading, tennis,
painting and traveling but was happiest when surrounded by family. He was active in family planning advocacy as
well as cancer patient support, having lost his second wife, Anne, to cancer.
Before his 2005 marriage to Susan (Colomb) Herpel, George was married to
Elizabeth Spencer, 1951-1972, and Anne Mayhew, 1974 until her death in 2000.
George was a dedicated member of the Bohemian Club, never tiring of the
wonderful speakers, or endless games of dominoes with his Hillbilly
campmates.
His wife,
Susan; his four children, Molly, Peter and wife Kim, Elizabeth and George and
wife Hannah, his grandchildren Lindsey and Emmet; his sister, Elisabeth Pfau
Wright; his nieces and nephews; and many extended family members survive George.
In lieu
of flowers, George's wish was that memorial donations be made to The Second
Opinion, 1200 Gough Street Suite 500, San Francisco, 94109; 415-775-9956,
