My Story

Bryan, Glenn LeVan, PhD, 90, of Richmond, VA, formerly of Lewes, DE and Bethesda, MD, died on January 5, 2012. He was born on January 10, 1921 in Canton, Ohio, to Henry Paul Bryan and Ella Kashner Bryan. He grew up in Shadyside, OH, graduated from Shadyside High School in 1938, and graduated from the College of Wooster in 1943. It was at the College of Wooster that he met his wife of 66 years, Olivia Ruth Judson of Santa Monica, CA, and they were married in January of 1943. He went on active duty in the United States Army infantry in August, 1943 and served in the European Theater, participating in the Battle of the Bulge and becoming severely wounded in battle on April 12, 1945 (coincidentally the day that FDR died). After honorable discharge from the army, he went back to school on the G.I. Bill and obtained his PhD in psychology from the University of Southern California in 1952. He went to work for the Office of Naval Research in 1960, and at the time of his retirement in 1983 he was the Associate Director of Life Sciences. He accumulated many honors and recognitions during his career, including membership in Phi Beta Kappa (1952), fellowship in the American Association for the Advancement of Science (1965), and the US Navy Distinguished Civilian Service Award (1983). He enjoyed a long and active retirement with Olivia, traveling to all the contiguous states in a variety of different motor homes, and otherwise residing at the Delaware shore. Olivia passed away on October 3, 2009, and Glenn moved to Richmond, VA to be nearer to immediate family. His older sister, Ella Marjorie Bryan Wright of Shadyside, OH, is also deceased.
Glenn is survived by his three sons, Geoffrey Levan Bryan (Martha) of Sunland, CA, Bradley Kerr Bryan (Laurie) of Richmond, VA and William Judson Bryan (Kathy O’Brien) of Annapolis, MD.
He also leaves behind his sister, Dorothy Bryan Spitler of Wooster, OH; four grandchildren: Kelly Bryan Smith of Jackson, MS, Keith Elliott Bryan of Alton, IL, Alice Hastings Bryan of Henrico, VA and Christopher Sean Bryan of Annapolis, MD; and one great grandchild, Simon Robert Smith of Jackson, MS. Additionally, he leaves behind beloved nieces and nephews and many friends in Lewes, DE and from the Capital Coaches Motor Home Club.  He leaves behind special friends Neil and Peg Scheck of Lewes, DE.
The military honors memorial service will be held Monday May 21, 2012 at the Post Chapel at Fort Myers promptly at 2:30 pm, followed by inurnment at Arlington National Cemetery.
