My Story

My Grandpa was a great man. He lived a great life. He was born in Kansas where he spent alot of his life. He did not have the best family growing up, but that didnt stop him from being the best father he could be to his two daughters and son and an amazing grandpa to us 7 grandkids and one great grandkid. He entered the marines at 17 to fight in World War II. After the war, my grandpa met my grandma when they were set up by friends on a Valentine's Day date. They fell in love and were engaged a year later. When my grandpa was called up for the Korean war, my grandma convinced him to stay in the states by becoming a Drill Instructor. After my grandpa retired from the Marines, he went to work for a company until he was forced to retire. He and my grandma moved to Arizona for a short time, but decided they missed us all in Kansas too much so they moved back. However, when my dad was transfer to Arizona 5 years later, they followed us out. They loved Arizona and wanted to be near us.

One of my grandpa's favorite past times when my brother and I were growing up was to take us out on the golf cart. We would count the sometimes hundreds of rabbits in their neighbors' front yards. My brother and I loved when he would let us drive. We weren't supposed to tell mom and dad that at the age of 11 or 12 grandpa was letting us drive the cart by ourselves.

Another thing that was big with both my grandparents was cards. It was kind of a coming of age event when we were taught how to play Gripe. My grandpa almost always won when we played and when he started to loose he would try to get as many points as possible (you want the lowest score) and would be goofy. This is one thing I loved about him. He had the best sense of humor. He could make anyone laugh and loved to talk to anyone. He was very social and loved people.

One special thing I shared with him was music. I have always loved music and have been singing since I was young. My grandpa taught himself how to play the piano when he was an adult and when I was old enough he taught me as well. Sometimes he would play Phantom of the Opera while I sang. He loved to do that. He recorded himself playing many different pieces that at some point I will love to be able to listen to. Right now i just can't listen to his voice announcing each song. It hurts my heart every time I hear it because I miss him so much.

Grandpa was diagnosed with Alzheimer's a few years ago. He was slowly becoming a different grandpa, however he did not take a dramatic decline until this past August. He was so confused and distraught that he had to be taken to the hospital and then placed into a nursing home. Watching him deteriorate over that past 7 months was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do. My grandpa was already thin, but lost so much weight that by the time he passed he was all bones.

On April 1, 2008 my grandpa was released from his disease. He went to join his Father in heaven. He had been sick for many days before and we were all thankful that he was able to hold on long enough for my aunts to have the time to make it to his side from four states over. He passed away with his wife and children with him. It was one of the few times that all of them had been in the room at the same time since everyone had come into town. My grandma was very thankful for this.

My grandpa was a wonderful man who I love and miss terribly, but I am so glad that he is no longer suffering. He will always be in my heart and the hearts of everyone who knew him. He was an amazing teacher, friend, father, grandfather, pianist, poet, as well as many other things. He is survived by his wife, three children and their spouses who my grandparents have always thought of as their own, 7 grandchildren, and two great grandchild with another on the way.
