My Story

She was born as Jeanette Schwartzman in Harlem on May 3, 1921 but lived most of her early life in the Bronx with her mother Rose and her sister and two brothers (Shirley, Bob and Jerry). Her father Isidore passed away in 1932 leaving the family to struggle during the depression. They moved to Toronto for 3 years in the 1930's for the promise of a better life. When they returned to their beloved Bronx, they eventually set up residence on College Ave in the Bronx. Working in New York during the war, she met Harry Blustein at a dance in 1942. He was a marine looking for some company. After they met, she gave her address to Harry. About a year later, he was looking through his address book and decided to set up a correspondonce with Jeanette. When he returned to New York on leave, he looked her up and they began a wartime relationship. He proposed and they were married on March 21, 1945. After completing his militatry requirements, they set up house in Newark, New Jersey. They moved around alot in the late 40's and eventually set up residence in Trenton, New Jersey in 1950 to be close to Harry's job at McGuire Air Force Base as a sheet metal mechanic. Living in Trenton for four years, they soon were joined by sons, Richard (1951) and David (1953). In order to be closer to her family he took a job on Staten Island and they moved to Irvington, New Jersey. One day in 1956, Harry's brother Pete called and told of great opportunity in the Miami area with his real estate business. He felt it too great an opportunity to resist and gave up his civil service job to relocate to the Miami area. The opportunities faded and soon he was working 3 jobs to support his family. She missed her New York based family and in 1960 they returned to the New York area.   After living near her sister in the Bronx for 2 years, they set up shop in eastern Queens in a large apartment complex called Glen Oaks (second section). Here she got a job in Mays in the cosmetic department  and worked there for 18 years. Although it was a tough job, she did love her job. She made friends and was able to travel all over the world through his job at PAn Am. When she was able to retire in 1980, they returned to South Florida. This time under much better circumstances. They lived in condos in Boca Raton, Coconut Creek and Tamarac.
It was a peaceful retirement dominated by mah jong games and early bird specials. Overall my Mom lived a productive life, which had its ups and downs but throught the years she was able to enjoy alot of what life had to offer. Her two sons and husband and four grandchildren  were vitally important to her and provided alot of joy to her through the years. She is survived today in the memory of those two sons who constantly keep her alive through their memories of her.
