My Story

Kathy Baxmeyer- Age 40
Kadin Baxmeyer- Age 7
Austin Baum- age 6

All drowned in a small pond/ lake near their house. They will all be greatly missed!

KSDK Funeral services have been scheduled for three people who drowned in a lake on private property in St. Clair County, Illinois, Friday night.

The bodies of Steven Austin Baum, 6, his friend Kadin Baxmeyer, 7, and Kadin's mother Kathy Baxmeyer, 40, were found after several hours of searching about 3:30 a.m. Saturday.

Austin's father, Steve Baum, said a ceremony for Austin Baum will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday at St. Louis Family Church in Chesterfield. Baum said they have set up the Austin Baum Memorial Fund at State Bank of Waterloo. Baum said all donations will be disbursed in Austin's memory.

Visitation for Kadin and Kathy Baxmeyer will be held Tuesday from 3 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Hope Christian Church, located at 9273 Coach Stop Road, off Route 3 between Waterloo and Columbia. Visitation will continue Wednesday at 10:00 a.m., with the service beginning at 1 p.m.

Though Steve Baum and his family live in Waterloo, he is a long-time personal fitness trainer in St. Louis County. He told a Newschannel 5 reporter, Monday, that he helped in the search for Austin, Kadin, and Kathy Friday night.

Baum said his wife called her best friend Kathy at about 6 p.m. to see if Kathy and the boys had left to go see a movie. But Kathy was not responding to cell phone calls or text messages, so they called the Monroe County Sheriff's Department.

Investigators called On-Star, and On-Star GPS tracking indicated Kathy's vehicle was still at the house. Baum said he went to the property and helped in the search. Eventually, someone found a boot, a glove and a coat that belonged to Kathy. Baum said he believed Kathy took the clothes off in a panic, after she realized the boys had gone out onto the ice and fallen through into the lake.

In their search efforts, authorities utilized a search and rescue dog. St. Clair County Sheriff's Department officials said the three bodies were found in about 12 feet of water.

"They had a Monroe County Sheriff canine on the scene that sniffed the boots and gloves and followed the scent right to the lake," St. Clair County Sheriff's Department Captain Steve Johnson said Saturday. "They then shined their lights out onto the lake. It was ice covered, but way out there you could see there was a hole just about the center of the lake."

"Our initial indication on this is that it's a tragic accident," said Johnson, "where the children went out onto the lake and fell through, and the mother went to try to help them and she also fell through. All three died as a result of that."

"This is a sad reminder of the dangers of children and ice covered lakes. Our hearts go out to the victims' families."
