My Story

Laraine Vandiford, wife of Wilmer Vandiford, and mother of Lawrence and Daniel Vandiford, passed on April 19th, 2012 after a nearly ten year long battle with stage 4 ovarian cancer. She was, and always will be, our mom.

She didn't always think of herself as a strong, independent person, but she was the strongest person I know. She was diagnosed in 2002, not long after our dad passed away. She loved our dad very much, and was devastated when we lost him. Many people would give up on life after enduring a tragic loss followed so closely by a late stage cancer diagnosis. But rather than let it keep her down, she set her sights on fighting the disease, and making the most of her life.

In the years that followed, she endured extensive surgery and multiple rounds of chemotherapy and radiation. But that only tells part of the story. Mom loved to travel. While fighting cancer, she traveled the country, from Florida to California, New York to Texas, and many places in between. She loved good food and live music. She was able to enjoy both in places like Nashville, Memphis, and Austin. She loved to see Danny play live, and did so many times.

I'll always remember the good times we spent together, visiting family in Boston and North Carolina, watching movies together (Danny and I both got our love of scary movies from our mom), and enjoying great food and music at many Italian festivals.

It used to be the four of us, and then just three. Now it's just Danny and I. And while we may live miles apart, the love and values that we learned from both our mom and dad give me comfort in knowing that we will always be close, and will always be there for each other. In our hearts and spirits, there will always be the four of us, together.
