My Story

Mama was just a great and selfless woman. She gave all to everyone that came her way. Her home was open to all irrespective of what your background was. She is kind to a fault. She was never angry nor bitter. Never heard curses from her lips.

Mama was a repertoire of wisdom. As a young boy growing up in her home anytime I was involved in any prank, mama would call me and tell me to close my eyes. She would then ask me if I was able to see her. When I said no, she would say that is what happens when someone dies. He wont be able to see anybody again, even those he or she loves. Of course, I will be afraid as I do not want to do anything that will make me not see mama or my friends again. I will there and then resolve to 'behave'.

Though mama did not receive any formal education,  she was nevertheless knowledgeable about contemporary issues of her time. She discussed issues with good knowledge and wisdom. I grew up to know her as a hardworking businesswoman. Mama never lacked! She always had money to spend and to lend. She always had food to eat and to share! Mama was industrious. In her prime she traversed the length and breadth of Nigeria buying and selling commodities- yams, kolanuts, frozen fish etc. As she grew older, her entrepreneural spirit did not wane. In the last 30 years, I saw her waking up every day at 4:00 a.m and embarking on business trips to Akure to buy frozen fish in bulk to resell in neighbouring towns and villages, and by mid morning, she was back in her stall to retail fish also. In between, she was buying, preserving and selling kolanuts in in wholesale and retail.

She was a trustworthy and dependable woman.  She was a woman who believes in equity and fairness and no wonder she was a Treasurer to so many community based organisations and trade groups in her community. For over 50 years, she was on the executive committee of her age group (Egbe Ibile) where she was the 'ELEJUA', and responsible for the custody and equitable sharing of the group's resources- gifts, dividends, profits etc. among members- a position she held till her transition in 2007.

Personally, I had looked forward to the day when Mama would join me on a trip to the United Kingdom if only once before she died. I prayed for that day to come, I longed for that day to unfold. When her health was failing, I became anxious. I kept promising her and asking her to keep fit and healthy so that I can fulfill this dream. I owed her this unique treat, if only for a few days. Alas, death came calling to keep me forever indebted! She left indelible impressions in the hearts of several people.  It was a life well lived. Indeed, we thank God for her life!
