To take a man as caring, intelligent, considerate, and unique as Marc and condense his life into a brief synopsis is like trying to bottle the ocean. Words are inadequate to express the loss of a man who was so important, and who touched as many lives. But a lover of words he was, so we shall attempt to remember him this way. Marc Shawn Aurel Glasgow was born in 1965 in Wurzburg, Germany, in a US military hospital. His mother, Emma Holzer was a German born Hungarian, and his father, Paul Glasgow, an American born Scot, making Marc a German born Hungarian Scot. While Marc’s father was off serving in the US Military as a notable military journalist, Marc was raised by his mother and grandmother. Living in Germany as a boy, he met one of his life long friends, Michael Duelm. Marc’s parents divorced when he was still young, and he and his mother moved to Clearwater, FL., though he spent the summers in Germany with his Oma, whom he loved more than anything. Always a loquacious and friendly person, Marc made friends wherever he went. He and his pals Alan Petrillo, Eric Hambleton, Robert Donahue and Kenny DeLally shared many notorious adventures during high school. After graduating Marc was forced out on his own; he was barely making a living as a poor teenager, and ended up living on the streets. These desperate times led him to join the Army. He was stationed in familiar Germany, where he founded the German-American Social Club with Michael Hochreuter and Michel Grosse. They had many adventures acting as catalyst for cultural exchange. In 1987 he married fellow soldier Holly Carskadon while on vacation in Denmark. They resided off base near Pirmasens, Germany during the remainder of his military service. While married to Holly, he met his 2nd wife, Charlene Tretheway. In 1990 he and Holly divorced, and Marc married Charlene. They moved to Tampa, FL, where they both attended the University of South Florida. Thus began Marc’s long academic career. He was a lover of knowledge and learning, and over the next 8 years studied a variety of subjects, from computers to sociology and philosophy. Marc opened his own computer consulting business, Aardwolf Consulting, specializing in Macintosh computers while attending USF. This turned out to be a lucrative niche, as he gained over 200 clients, from individuals to corporations. In 1992 Marc and Charlene separated, and although Marc dated a few girls, he could not find one who fit his ideal girlfriend persona. He had nearly given up on love, but as Marc put it, it was when he stopped looking that he found his true love, Paula Selvidge. At their first “meeting” they were ships passing in the night. As strangers, both attended a showing of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. He noticed her and remembered her red dress, but they did not speak; they did not “meet.” As fate would have it, they would actually meet a few months later through Paula’s sister who had been chatting with the “Cyberpoet” on a social website. The connection was made. Marc and Paula started dating on May 17th, 1993, days after she graduated high school. She moved in with Marc on her 18th birthday, and they have been together ever since. After moving into Marc’s family home in Clearwater in 1995, the couple acquired 2 dogs, Jaquamo and Radar, and a cat, Vicious. The little family spent the next 3 years enjoying happy times, running around the Clearwater Airpark in the middle of the night, and going to Honeymoon Island dog beach. Then, disaster struck. In 1998 a tornado hit their house, and they had to move; back to Tampa…into the same complex where they formerly lived. Being a college area, the two met many USF students. These neighbors were predominantly Cypriot born, and over the next few years Marc gained the title “Godfather to the Cypriots,” since he would welcome newcomers to the neighborhood, help them get settled in, and introduce them around. Marc was an ambassador, who was even called upon to greet newly arriving Cypriots from the airport when they came to America. This is just one of the many ways he showed his compassion and kindness, helping anyone he could. In his pastime Marc loved to ride, fix, and talk about motorcycles. It became such a passion of his over the past few years that he spent a good portion of his days chatting with other bikers on motorcycle forums, spending hours answering motorcycle questions and sharing his knowledge with others. He started on Katana Planet and then became involved with the Katriders.com forum. His helpful nature and knowledge earned him much respect from other bikers, and he became a sought out pillar of the online community. Over the years, Marc was not only a computer consultant, but earned his bachelors degree in sociology, designed and sold motorcycle accessories, and also became the sole designer of point of purchase coupons for the German grocery marketOne of his favorite things to do, however, was to show his love for Paula. He was very romantic, always surprising her with gifts for no reason. At the beginning of their relationship he went to Germany for a month, but still had flowers delivered to her every day for a week, and then every week after that, just to show he was thinking about her, even from a great distance. Several times, he took her to Germany, once taking her to the real Cinderella’s Castle, Neuschwannstein, in Southern Germany. They were both still so in love that, in the fall of 2000, after having been together for 7 years, Marc proposed, and Paula happily accepted. Marc Glasgow could not have been a finer human being. He was caring, loving, romantic, humorous, open-minded, proud, reasonable, intelligent, lovable, passionate, handsome, understanding, forgiving, considerate, surprisingly unpredictable, generous, funny, sweet, thoughtful… but as was stated, simple words cannot encompass the incredible person who was Marc Glasgow. But if you were lucky enough to know him, as a friend, a neighbor, a lover, or even just as a name in the world of motorcycle forums, you already understand.
