My Story

Michael Anthony Merchant, 44, loving and devoted son, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away unexpectedly on July 31, 2011 in Citrus Springs, Florida. Michael was born in Willimantic, CT on March 20, 1967 to Dennis Sr. and Beverly Merchant. He graduated from Windham High School in 1985. He went on to Manchester Community College and graduated with a degree in Culinary Arts. Michael began his career locally at Kathy Johns, The Victorian Lady and The Homestead Restaurant as well as spending multiples summers working as a chef at the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp. The last fifteen years of his chef career was spent as an Executive Chef at Aetna Insurance. He lived in Eastern Connecticut until he moved to Florida to be with and help care for his parents in 2008. Besides spending time with his family, he loved his many camping adventure with his close friends, fishing, playing poker, and following the New York Yankees and UCONN Huskies. He is survived by and will be greatly missed by his sister Tammy and her husband Marcel of Storrs, CT, his brothers Dennis Jr. and his wife Julia of Citrus Springs, FL, and Greg Qualls of Newington CT along with his nieces and nephews Lauren, Evan and Jonathan Halle of Storrs; Alexa and Adrian Merchant of Citrus Springs FL; Jason, Gregory and Nicole Qualls of Newington, CT as well as many close friends and relatives. He was predeceased by a niece, Miranda Qualls. A Memorial Service to celebrate Mike’s life will be held in Connecticut at a later date.
