My Story

Joanna G. Woods, 61, a resident of the Prospect community, died Jan. 5, 2008, at Southeastern Hospice House in Lumberton after a 10-month battle with lung cancer.

Woods was born in 1946, in Powhatan, W.Va. She and her family moved to Richmond, VA when she was a teenager.  This is where she met the love of her life, Donald "Herbert" Woods.  He had graduated barber school and was working in Virginia.

While married with three young children, she received her GED from Robeson Community College and then went on to pursue not only her bachelor's from UNCP, but a master's degree in Elementary Education as well. She worked for 28 years for the Public Schools of Robeson County and retired in 2005. She once said that her son Sam pleaded with her for that to be her last stint in school because he missed having her around home as much.  She made a promise to him at that moment that that would be her final degree.

Woods was a devoted teacher; she genuinely loved each student who entered her classroom and touched countless lives throughout the years. Her faith in Christ was strong and family was the most important thing in her life. She was at her best as a wife, mother and doting grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Donald “Herbert” Woods, her father, and an infant granddaughter, Riley Noel Jacobs. Surviving are her mother and stepfather, Audella Jacobs and Billy Jacobs, both of Pembroke; a son, Sam Woods; two daughters, Kristy Woods Mann and Lezlie Woods-Jacobs (Jennings); two grandsons, Brian Woods and Jace Jacobs; five granddaughters, Raven Woods, Alex and McKenzie Maynor, Layah Mann and Wren Jacobs, all of Maxton; four brothers, Carl Edward Nichols (Lynn) of West Virginia, Tim Nichols of South Carolina, Rodney Nichols (Renee) of Laurinburg and Michael Villiers of Pembroke; two sisters, Norma White of West Virginia and Deborah Nichols of Pembroke; and an adoring aunt, Esta Moss of Virginia.

Joanna Woods will leave a legacy of love and joy for all who knew her.  As was stated by a close family friend, you couldn't help but love her.
