Dick's Tributes:
Brad Robinson:
My name is Brad and I'm the eldest grandson of Dick. When Granny asked me to write this eulogy I
was honored that I got to speak to everyone today.
Dick was a very positive man with a smile on his face all
the time. He had a true positive outlook
on life and lived it to its fullest. Justin,
Richard and I will always remember how courteous and patient he was with us and how he was willing
to take the time to show you how to do things right. He was an inspiration on
how to fully enjoy life without regret.
I was the ring bearer at Granny and Dicks wedding back in 1979. Throughout the years us grandkids were taken
on many hiking, backpacking and camping trips.
He had a love of the mountains that could not be matched. With Dick I managed to climb up Heart
Mountain, Ha Ling peak and Exshaw pass.
He also showed me Grotto canyon and Jurra Creek that
I take my kids to as well. He loved
scrambling over boulders, crossing creeks and scaling walls. If it was a challenge he embraced it to the
fullest.
Another love of his was Astronomy. He was always ready to pull out his latest
telescope and show us his view of the stars.
From showing Anna (my daughter) the rings of Saturn in his backyard
after dinner to attending various star parties throughout Alberta and
Saskatchewan. His love of astronomy was
very evident. He volunteered hours of
his time to the Royal Astronomical Society and the Science center.
Another passion of his was gardening. I wouldn't want to count the hours he spent
in the garden tending to the flowers, vegetables and his beloved roses. His roses were truly remarkable and the pride
that he had in them was seen through his meticulous care of them.
Model trains and parasailing were fond pastimes as well. He really enjoyed visiting the train show
every year and seeing what was new and exciting. Heading to Cochrane and Parasailing at Muller
windsports was a great adrenaline rush for him.
Dick also liked food.
After dinner he would always say that was the best dinner he had had all
day. He liked some weird things like Marmite,
brussel sprouts, Hungarian crescents and candied ginger . I always dreaded going over to his house when
marmalade was being made because it didn't smell very good. I seem to remember one time when Granny was
away and he had to fend for himself. He made one of his famous one pot meals
from his Bachelor days. Noodles, tuna
and veggies. However the can of what he
thought was tuna turned out to be cat food.
He thought it was still the best dinner he had had all day.
I made a brussel
sprout recipe he really enjoyed one year for Christmas. I seem to remember even Granny having one or
maybe two. You could almost always
count on Dick to become the garbage disposal at dinner and finish off the last
little bit of something that was left.
I remember many phone calls from him on technology and
computers. He always had questions on
the latest technology or gadgets that he could get. He frequently asked me my recommendations on
what to get in regards to PC, laptops or tablets. I even got him hooked on torrents. Dick even downloaded and burned a CD full of
inappropriate music for Richard without even a batting an eye.
During the past summer my family went on a hike to Grotto
canyon with Dick, Granny and there friend Mary.
I'm really glad we got to go out and share this experience with him and
the kids. We had a great time scrambling
around the creek bed helping each other over the logs, boulders and water. He was truly in his element enjoying the
outdoors and I wish we would have done this more.
Dick was great man and will be sorely missed.
