My Story

Shaun O’Neill was Principal of The Mairehau Law Centre situated at Unit 7/422 Innes Rd, Mairehau and enjoyed working with the local community in general. Shaun was born and bred in Christchurch and was admitted to the Bar in 1987. After serving his time working for a local firm he set up his own practice where he was based in Clarendon Tower in Worcester Street for 12 years. Due to the hassle of working in town (not to mention parking woes), Shaun decided to purchase the premises at Unit 7/422 Innes Rd and set up his practise from there. Shaun and his team moved in on 1st December 2006 and its all been forward since then. These premises are both better and larger than the offices in the centre of town where he was previously working and are definitely more suitable to a family/business oriented legal service which Shaun wishes to promote. One of the real advantages is the parking either directly outside of the office or just down from the shopping centre on Innes Road. As everyone knows, ease of car parking just doesn’t occur in the middle of town! Shaun’s background started in Court work – with an initial predominance of criminal law – Duty Solicitor, Jury trials and the like. However, the general nature of any legal practice demands a general availability to meet client’s needs and requirements. So appearances in the Family Court, the civil jurisdiction of the District Court, the High Court and the Court of Appeal occurred during his time at the bar. The culmination of his career at the bar came in 2004 when he accompanied his client company’s Barrister (then Mr Wilson QC and now Mr Justice Wilson of the New Zealand Supreme Court) and appeared in (what was then New Zealand’s final Court) the Privy Council (situated at No: 2 Downing Street) in London as junior counsel. His experience in Court can help provide a balanced view as to whether litigation is appropriate in any circumstance. While in general litigation is to be avoided, sometimes people have no choice and this is where Shaun can help. Also, if he cannot help, then he has access to the city’s barristers who due to the specialist nature of their practice, can and do assist. However, while some Court work will always be a part of his practice, Shaun now is definitely moving towards the family and business oriented legal service. This includes conveyancing, relationship property, family trusts, small businesses and companies, wills and some aspects of family law. According to Shaun, the backbone of this country is made up by the family (in whatever shape it appears today). In general it will consists of parents committed to the raising of their children to be decent and producing members of our present and future community harbouring tolerance and acceptance of our differences but promoting individual abilities and a personal striving for success overall. Therefore, he wishes to work within those aspects of legal practice. Shaun is ably backed up by the expertise of legal executive Adrienne Montie and accounts manager Nicola Sutton. Adrienne is extremely skilled and able in the area of conveyancing and other aspects of the law and what Shaun cannot help you with, she will. Nicola’s strength is in accounts but is certainly an able assistant when it comes to helping clients in general. Shaun is a sports nut and can be found at Jade Stadium for most of the Crusaders/Canterbury/Wizards/All Blacks/Black Caps games (or in front of the TV when they are away). He likes to mountain bike and walk regularly to keep fit and while separated he has an extremely close relationship with his son.
