My Story

By anyone who knew him, Major Stephen Scott Rine was always referred to as Scott. He was born on May 11, 1947 to Donald and Naomi Rine in Mt. Vernon Ohio.

Scott joined the US Army in 1967 and has served over 30 years in Active Millitary Service. He served with the 1st Aviation Brigade for two tours of duty in Vietnam (1967-69). As a door gunner and crew chief on helicopters, he was shot down four times. He was awarded the purple heart for injuries sustained during his tours in Vietnam. He was also awarded the Vietnamese Cross of Galantry, 24 Combat Air Citations and the Presidential Citation for participating in three major offensives and other various millitary awards.

Still on active duty within the US, on February 3, 1974, Scott married Rosemarie DiPilato in Worcester, Massachusettes. The couple moved to Scott's station at Fort Sam, Houston, TX and had the first of three children, Kristen Marie. They returned to Massachusettes where Scott served as an adviser and staff counselor for the crisis intervantion in Boston, Massachusettes Navy Marine Corp., Walter Reed Army Hospital. There they had two additional children, Anthony Scott and Jonathan Clifton.

In 1990 and 1991, Scott was called again to active duty to serve in Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He served with the 11th Armored Calvary at Ft. Bliss, TX as a crisis intervention specialist.

Scott continued his work for the millitary by becoming a Licensed Social Worker, with specific interests in Veterans Affairs. He worked with the VA to bring aid to other soilders whose lives have been affected by the Vietnam War. During his time with the VA and Southern Command, Scott made many friends, mostly Soliders without a voice of their own by supporting and promoting Veteran Aid.

During these years, Scott was also a loving husband and father to his wife Rosemarie and their three children. Scott involved himself in his children's sports activities, particularly his son Jonathan's involvement in his High School JROTC program. Scott was able to start new programs such as the "Shake-A-Leg" foundation's "Student Sailing Program."

Scott became a grandfather in 1998 to Jonathan's son, namely "Jonathan Anthony Rine, Jr."

"I think being a husband, father and grandfather was his greatest joy. He would do anything for them," says Elizabeth, wife to Jon Rine.

Scott Rine passed away on January 18, 2008 while living in his home in Mount Vernon, Ohio.

He is survived by his wife, Rosemarie Rine of Jacksonville, FL; daughter, Kristen M. (Julie) Rine of Margate, Florida; sons Anthony Scott Rine of Miami, Florida and Jonathan C. (Elizabeth) Rine of Jacksonville, Florida; his parents, Donald C. and Naomi (Davidson) Rine of Mount Vernon, Ohio; brother Donald D. (Cheryl Pruitt) Rine of Mount Vernon; grandson, Jonathan Anthony Rine, Jr and several nieces, nephews and close friends from around the world.
