My Story

Vaclav Javurek was born in July 1933 to Barbora and Vaclav Sr. Vaclav was born in Czechoslovakia. He had a sister named Eva. She married and became Eva Sollarova. I, his daughter, am her namesake. Vaclav liked to play guitar and smoke cigarettes and work on cars. He was drafted to the military in CZ at eighteen. He and his friend were not great supporters of the military cause that was happening at that time in politics in CZ and decided to defect. Vaclav and his friend stole a truck and broke over the border, crashing through the guard arms and armed guards. His friend, the driver of the truck, was struck by the ensuing gun fire in the shoulder. They were forced to seek medical help as the shoulder wound was severe. Local medical centers, guarded my military personnel were prepared for apprehension.
Taken into custody, Vaclav and his friend were summarily treated and driven to a prison in Austria. Time in the Austrian prison was life changing for him. Seperated at some point from his friend- he was shipped to the Americas coming in at Ellis Island and released to New York with a language barrier and only the survival skills he learned as a child and those learned as an adolescent and young man in prison. Well into his twenties at this point, he survived, he made enough and saved enough money to drive to California with a friend also from Czechoslovakia.
In Sylmar, California Vaclav met Sharon (my mother) through a friend who had arranged a double date with her and a friend. She said he was very "handsy".
Vaclav and Sharon were very different people. They were married and had two daughters. Vaclav worked as a machinist and bought a house in Glendale, CA. He tore the old house down with his truck and he and Bruce Warner built from the foundation up the new house which to this day still stands.
Vaclav took care of his wife and children the best that he could. He successfully started his own business and lived well. On his 50th birthday he did a handstand. He was proud of his success.
