My Story

    Wendy passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, at the Geelong
Hospital, on August 3, 2011. Aged 45 years Loved and loving wife of Peter.
Devoted Mum of Luke and Shaun. Adored daughter of Patricia and Robert (dec).
Much loved sister and friend of Robert, Raeleen, Colin and Gary. You worked so
hard for those you loved, You always did your best, You fought until you could
no more, And now you are at rest. Sadly missed. 'Our Sunshine'

   She had Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Defficiency. A rare heriditary disease that affects the liver,skin and the lungs. Wendy was on the list for a lung transplant, but her life was cut short because of this. Once in every 2500 people in Australia has severe alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency
(levels below 20% of normal). This translates to nearly 7000 Australians with
alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency.One thing that is very different between the United States and Australia is that at the present time there is no specific treatment for
alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency although some drugs such as bronchodilators may
be helpful. These should only be used on your doctor's advice. In the future,
intravenous infusions of alpha-1-antitrypsin concentrate may be possible for
some patients. Higher blood concentrations of alpha-1-antitrypsin would result
and hopefully this would protect lung tissue from destruction.

   At present this treatment is not available in Australia and it
is important to realise that this treatment has not yet been proven to be
effective.(RE:Australian Lung Foundation) Were as in the United States we have the medication that has been proven to help extend/prolong ones life by using IV medication. We need to get the word out about this and get the laws passed to get the IV medications for all of our Alphas out there outside the United States. She was way to young to pass she was only 45 years of age.
