My Story

William Garth Carter, 81 of Naples, Florida died on Saturday, October 4, 2008 at Avow Hospice in Naples following a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born in Lock Springs, Missouri on September 8, 1927, a son of Garth Leland and Mary (Lester) Carter. Raised in Hamilton, Missouri and Kansas City, Kansas, William graduated from Bishop Ward High School in 1945 and served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.

William moved to New York City in 1950 and pursued a successful career in Wall Street at Francis I. DuPont Brokerage. In 1969 he moved with his family to St. Vincent in the British West Indies to manage the Sugar Mill Inn Hotel. Returning to the US in the 1970’s he worked in a variety of positions in NYC and the Bahamas, eventually retiring after serving as special assistant to NY State Commissioner of Energy, James Larocca in Albany, NY. He moved to Naples in 1997.

He is survived by his life partner of nine years, Brian M. Doyle, four children, Adam G. (Maria Luisa) Carter of Naples, Alexandra G. Carter (Ruth Potts) of Hyattsville, MD, Adrienne G. Carter and Noah W. (Lylla) Carter of Southampton, NY. He is also survived by two brothers, Richard B. Carter of Naples, John F. Carter of Houston Texas and seven grandchildren: Dagny Carter, Julia Carter, Michael Carter, Mateus Carter, Ariel Carter, Harrison Carter and Grace Carter.

A Memorial Service and Celebration of William’s life will be held Sunday, October 12th at 3 o’clock. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to Avow Hospice, 1095 Whippoorwill Lane, Naples, Florida. 34105
